Yes, "exodus" is the right word here. If Facebook is the Pharoah's Egypt then Ello is the new promised land. And what exactly is being promised there? Anonymity, no ads, no commoditisation and many others claims Facebook cannot make anymore. Ello, a social networking site that started last year, is gaining momentum. The nitro-boost it needed came in the form of Facebook's rigid "real name only" stance. San Francisco, which has a large LGBTIQ community, did not welcome this move. Many drag queens and trans people took offense to the fact that their Facebook accounts were blocked because they were not using their legal names — something many people in the LGBTIQ community avoid, either for fear of being outed or because most of them do not identify with the gender and the name they were assigned at birth. Ello, on the other hand, was started by seven programmers and artists, who collectively believe that Facebook is not a social network anymore. It is mor...

Wow, what a whirlwind! Functional testing, services testing, Cloud testing , SOX compliancy, hiring. Processes, a metrics program, contracts. It's not so much what to do, it's where to start. So I thought I'd start at the beginning. One of the biggest problems any new QA/QC manager has is the existing staff's preconceptions of "what testing should be" and "how testing should work". They base that on what they've experienced in past companies. The problem with that is often "QA" at those former companies was (ahem) somewhat less than what it could have been. Perhaps the testing staff weren't especially valued, and their sole contribution came at the end of the project where the problems they found inevitably led to project delays, or a product with problems in production due to lack of time to fix those problems. Sometimes they didn't test a certain type of application at all. Often they were ignored throughout the...

One of the main issues holding back the popularity of Bitcoin right now is security. Bitcoin security is a tricky subject, and it's not something that can be described in a three to five minute news segment on CNBC or Bloomberg. While there have been plenty of stories of bitcoins being stolen by bad actors over the past few years, it's important to realize that there is a difference between Bitcoin and bitcoins. Bitcoin, with a capital "B", is the name of the protocol and payment system, while bitcoins are the currency used on that network. By differentiating between the two, it becomes easier to understand the truth about Bitcoin security.   Bitcoin Has Never Been Hacked The first thing that needs to be pointed out when it comes to the security of this cryptocurrency is that Bitcoin has never been hacked . All of the stories of stolen or hacked bitcoins are referring to online exchanges and wallets that are created as services outside of the Bitcoin bl...

Huawei has developed by its own account, a new technology that allows to boost smartphone battery within ten minutes at 50 percent of their capacity. Overall, batteries should be charged approximately ten times faster than is currently standard.  The technology comes from the Huawei subsidiary Watt Lab. On the Battery Symposium in Japan they recently showed three different concepts. A 600 mAh battery for example reached within two minutes 68 percent of its capacity. Another current memory with 3000 mAh was charged after five minutes to 48 percent, which is rich with a Huawei smartphone for a talk time of ten hours. The quick charging is made possible by the addition of heteroatoms to the molecules of the graphite anode of the battery. They serve as a catalyst for the reception and transit of lithium by the carbon deposits. The heteroatoms shorten loud Huawei charging time, without lowering the energy density or the battery life. Currently Huawei subjects neither th...

Hyundai's Genesis Coupe enters 2015 with some major updates and changes in it’s auto parts , making it highly desirable for those looking to spend as little as possible to get the power and performance of some higher-end coupes. Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a serious rear-wheel-drive sport coupe. For true high performance you need Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) and lots of power. Genesis Coupe has both. The sole available engine, 3.8-liter direct-injected V-6 makes 348 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual is standard, while Hyundai’s own eight-speed automatic is available and features rev-matched downshifting and steering-wheel paddle-shifters. If you thought Facebook's privacy settings were a headache, you aren't alone, Randi Zuckerberg, sister of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, found out the hard way just how tricky those privacy controls can be. Randi Zuckerberg did what many people do, shared some photos. Her intention was to only share the photo privately, however, it was widely seen on Facebook and when someone else posted it to Twitter, the photo went viral. According to Marketing Land , Randi Zuckerberg took a photo of her family testing out Facebook's new Poke feature; she then uploaded the image of her family to Facebook, with the intention to only share with her friends. However, to her dismay she learned that a woman named Callie Schweitzer saw the photo, but then shared it on Twitter. So how did Schweitzer see the photo? What reportedly happened was Zuckerberg set the post to private, but she then tagged everyone in the photo. That meant that friends of those tagged would see ...

Back in 2011, two of the major social networks, Facebook and Skype, were working together to make video calling possible in Facebook Messenger. Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at that time that Steve Ballmer (then-Microsoft CEO) and Zuckerberg were really aligned on this project. Facebook today launched video calling in Facebook Messenger for iPhone and Android and now there is no doubt that Facebook and Skype have broken up and Facebook was the one who dumped. Facebook and Skype, who once shared friendly association, parted their ways in 2013 when the former introduced a voice calling option that used its own technology. But the real rapture in these two companies was noticed a few months back when Facebook quietly stopped using Skype for video calls made from the desktop, replacing it with its in-house developed technology. Skype-powered video calls required users to install a browser plug in, while the technology that Facebook developed in-house works...

Google gives up on pitching Google+ as a competitor of other social networks like Facebook , Twitter or LinkedIn. The company announced that it’s changing up its strategy with Google+ that will become two separate pieces: Photos and Streams. Tons of people use Google+ because logging into it gives user access to Gmail , Google Drive and many other Google apps, but they avoid using the social network facet of it. Some insiders of Google interacted with a leading media group and told what happened to the network that was really important to Larry Page. The main problem with Google+ is that the company tried too much to make it like Facebook, as told by a former Googler. The company was late to market and motivated from a competitive standpoint. The source told that Google+ employees were sectioned off within Google to prevent gossip about the product from spreading and that was just a standard security measure taken. Read on to know some other things that were disclosed by the former...

Google+ is growing steadily and, whilst it may not yet have the same uptake of Twitter and Facebook, it’s getting to the point where it’s hard for some industries to ignore. Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to start building your business’s presence. Here are our top 7 tips for having a successful business account on Google+ 1. Don’t hide the good stuff With the ability to share content with specific groups of ‘circles’ we often find ourselves sharing directly with that circle and no one else. This is the wrong way of thinking. Gaining exposure and as much of it as possible you need to be casting your net far and wide, to do this share it with ‘public’ as well so new potential followers can find your content and connect with you. 2. Share Circ...

I had been driving for three days, 10 or more hours a day, in my lime green 1975 Ford F-150, the night I rolled into Santa Rosa. I was incredibly tired. I was fearful of running out of money, so I looked for a cheap motel, away from the highway. I had driven further and further west that day, through herds of longhorn cattle in West Texas , and into New Mexico, and in both places, there were not nearly enough dwellings, traffic, or human beings to meet my definition of "civilized." It was barren and desolate. On each night of my journey from Michigan to California , I always parked with the back of the pickup near the door of the room where I would be sleeping, and this night was no different. I wanted to be able to hear someone if they tried to tamper with my truck, especially the camper top or tailgate. I had pretty much everything I owned, organized and stacked to the camper top in the truck. This motel was cheap, all right. I don't remember how much the rat...

Hearing Aids Hearing aids are a blessing for the hearing impaired, however they do require some maintenance to ensure they are providing maximum benefit. If your hearing aid does not seem to be working properly there are troubleshooting steps you can try before calling your audiologist or hearing professional. No Sound If there is no sound and you have recently changed the battery, check to ensure it was properly installed. A common issue is inadvertently putting the battery in backwards. Also, if you have been out in cold weather, give your hearing device time to reach room temperature. If the earmold or tubing is completely blocked with earwax, or if the tubing has come loose, there will be no sound. If you cannot remedy with cleaning or adjusting on your own, call your hearing professional's office and arrange to drop your hearing aid off for a clean and adjust by their technicians. Sound Is Fading If sound is beginning to fade, the first thing to check ...

At London 2012, Oscar Pistorius made headlines across the world when he became the first amputee to compete in an Olympic track event. Apart from some slight unpleasantness at the Paralympic Games when he appeared to accuse a rival of an unfair advantage because his blades were longer than they should have been, 2012 was a great year for Pistorius and he seemed to be looking forward to bigger and better things. That all came crashing down around his ears when he shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in his own home. In a case that has shocked the world, he claims that he thought she was an intruder and was shooting in self-defence. The prosecution, on the other hand, have refuted this claim, suggesting that Pistorius wilfully murdered Reeva following an argument. The first officer on the scene, and the lead investigator in the case, Hilton Botha, has claimed that Pistorius put his prosthetics on before shooting Reeva, adding to the evidence that the shooting was prem...

LinkedIn may be the world's leading professional social network, but that is also contributing to its potential value to hackers. Social networks have always attracted hackers. Sites like Facebook are regularly prone to a variety of different attacks, as members' willingness to share stuff quickly becomes there undoing. Before thinking about that hilarious picture of a singing cat that came from somebody they didn't know, they've clicked it and downloaded malware. As LinkedIn grows (150 million members and counting), the interest from hackers grows with it. Behavior on LinkedIn makes it a particularly useful target for hackers. On Facebook, users can be encouraged to keep their accounts private and secure and they tend to be wary about the people they share personal information with. On LinkedIn, a different set of rules exist by the very nature of the site. For a start, users potentially want to be sought out and contacted by recruiters and poten...

Many of us have never visited Arctic, but we often hear about it and that the climate change is radically reshaping it. It can be pretty hard to believe what’s happening in a distant land of polar bears, it doesn’t stop there. The changes, nature is bringing in Arctic, will have global- wide consequences.      It’s Changing Your Weather.  The scientific researches show that changes to the Arctic are leading to the changes in weather in the mid-latitudes. A warmer Arctic effects the stream of air high above us in the stratosphere that carries our weather.    If the Arctic warms faster as compared to the mid latitudes, the jet stream could slow down that leads to a persistence of intense weather conditions like intense snow, intense heat or intense rain. Changing What You Eat. The fishing industry has a direct negative effect of the warming oceans as Artic and sub-Arctic are a major source of its catch. While the less icy A...
